About
No one expects Grandma Gertie to save the day!
Gertrude "Gertie" Shortman is Arnold's eccentric grandmother. An upbeat, goofy woman with a tendency to have odd habits, such as calling people she knows unusual names or mixing up holidays, Gertie is surprisingly powerful for her age, boasting a black belt in Martial Arts and even having some insane feats such as hijacking a bulldozer and even saving a subway train from going dark. She owns the Sunset Arms boarding house along with her husband, Phil, who affectionately calls her "Pookie".
Playstyle
In spite of her age, Grandma Gertie is a fast, agile rushdown character. She excels at comboing the opponent with her big aerial buttons while also being able to take their stock fairly quickly with her Forward Aerial. She is not lacking on the zoning side either, though: she also has several very long strong attacks, and a goodie basket Down Special that summons not one, but two items! Grandma Gertie also has a versatile recovery, great survivability, and decent out of shield options. Gertie really does it all.
If you're looking for a character that's all about adrenaline, Grandma Gertie might be for you!
Metagame
Grandma Gertie is ranked 22nd out of 29 on the current tier list, in the B tier.
Grandma Gertie is a surprisingly fast character for her size, having great movement and mobility. She is an extremely intimidating character on shield, as a lot of her moves are huge and pose little risk if she whiffs them. Gertie also has a wild card in her Down Special, which can pose a great benefit to her if she rolls a Flyswatter or a bomb. Gertie also has some very scary kill options, with the centerpiece being her Forward Air, having her opponents run the risk of being killed off of an edgeguard or ledgetrap at an early %.
However, Gertie has notable flaws. Her tall frame means she's combo food in a lot of matchups, and due to being rather light, she can be very frail in some matchups. Gertie also has a terrible disadvantage, which poses trouble if she is down a stock. Her grounded strongs were also given much more startup in Patch 1.13, which diminishes what was once one of her go-to kill options. Finally, Gertie's recovery has been made much more exploitable, and she either has to waste resources when recovering low or risk an early death.
Gertie was previously a very popular character in the metagame, having a sizeable playerbase and very strong results across all of tournament play. However, subsequent nerfs to her strongest tools and her weight in Patch 1.13 diminished interest in the character, and her playerbase dwindled. While Gertie still has some dedicated players, she is a very rare character in the present metagame, and is generally considered a mid-tier character. While she still has some favorable opinions shared across the community, due to the nerfs given to her in Patch 1.13, opinions on her viability have overall soured, and some think she has possibly fallen into a low-tier placement in future tier list discussions.
