About
This sourpuss octopus is always looking for inspiration.
Hailing from the SpongeBob SquarePants series, Squidward is an extremely grouchy and arrogant octopus from Bikini Bottom who believes everyone is an idiot except for him. Stuck as a cashier at the Krusty Krab, he believes he is above that, seeing himself as a masterful artist and musician who will someday be finally be recognized for his talents. Not helped is the fact that misfortune always strikes him, usually caused inadvertently by SpongeBob and Patrick's antics. Despite this, Squidward still has a soft side, and while he wouldn't admit it, he does care a lot about SpongeBob and he's helped out on several of his adventures, albeit unwillingly...
Playstyle
Squidward is an oddball character with a ton of amazing tools. He has great damage output, tricky movement, and has some of the best edgeguarding tools in the game. He's a tricky character to learn well, but, much like the character himself, with mastery comes great power, as Squidward becomes one of the strongest air characters in the game.
If you like tricky movement and several strong and unpredictable tools, Squidward is the character for you!
Metagame
Squidward is ranked 5th out of 29 on the current tier list, in the S tier.
Squidward possesses one of the best punish games amongst the entire cast. His great aerial game combined with his powerful strongs make him a terrifying threat both on-stage and off-stage. His down special, "You're Annoying Me", only serves to make his punish game even more threatening. Squidward also has a very strong edgeguarding game, with his Light Down Air being very powerful and leads to an early grave. Squidward also as a great recovery, making edgeguarding him very challenging.
However, despite these great strengths, Squidward does have some flaws. His neutral game is below average, relative to most of the cast. This makes it so he has to get up close in order to get his brutal punishes. Squidward also struggles against characters with disjoints. Besides Forward Air, his tools can't realistically compete against some of the best disjoints.
While Squidward's strengths largely outweigh his weaknesses, some believe his weaknesses have yet to be fully countered, with some believing he is an overrated character. Nonetheless, his strong punish game continues to rectify him as a top-tier character amongst the metagame.
