Garfield is the title character of one of the biggest American syndicated comic strips of all time, running from June 19th, 1978 to the present day. An overweight, lazy cat who has a penchant for lasagna, TV, and kicking dogs, Garfield lives large both physically and metaphorically. He resides in a quaint Indiana town with his owner Jon Arbuckle, and fellow pet Odie, often getting into anything from usual cat activities to larger than life adventures.
Playstyle
Garfield, like fellow cat representative El Tigre, is a spacie-type character. Garfield likes getting in your face and performing tight pillar combos. His strong aerial game is what makes him the cat's meow, but what makes him really special is his install mechanic, Sugar Rush, performed by collecting food gained by performing Side Special and then initiating it using Down Special. This makes him faster and makes his combo game even more of a threat.
If you like a more traditional playstyle, Garfield is for you!
Metagame
Garfield is ranked 27th out of 29 on the current tier list, in the C tier. This is a significant drop from his 8th out of 25 placement in the first Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.
Garfield's biggest strength is arguably his combo game. His aerials allow him to chain his attacks rather easily, and he also has pillar combos befitting his archetype. Garfield also possesses a meter install with Sugar Rush, allowing him to become blisteringly fast and deal large amounts of knockback, allowing him to take out opponents quickly if he overwhelms them. Lastly, Garfield has a particularly strong edgeguarding game thanks to his Aerial Down Strong.
However, Garfield also has some considerable flaws. His neutral game is not the best, with his Side Special being rather slow and predictable. His base mobility is also rather average, which worsens his pressure game further. Sugar Rush, despite also being a strength, also comes with it's vices: for all of the power it gives Garfield, it also makes him the lightest character in the game, and can be tough to control due to the increase in velocity it grants him. Above all else, however, Garfield is widely considered to simply be outclassed by other characters in the game. A lot of the benefits granted by his comeback mechanic are better on other characters or have less risk attached to them, and while he does have good moves on paper, in practice he ends up losing trades to disjoints or other far-range moves.
Garfield is perhaps one of the most, if not the most, controversial and debated characters in the metagame. In the early metagame, Garfield was considered to be a very good character, and was a popular early metagame pick. However, subsequent nerfs and changes to other characters largely hindered Garfield, drastically changing opinions on his viability. This caused Garfield to be very negatively received on the current tier list, having a bottom 3 spot at the very end of C tier. However, recent discoveries concerning Sugar Rush, as well as his overall good combo game with momentum, have caused widespread debate within the community on whether Garfield is actually much better than his current placement. As such, some members of the community believe Garfield's placement on the current tier list is no longer accurate. Despite these developments, Garfield remains a niche, if not unideal pick in tournament play, but has seen some success as a secondary or counterpick character.
