Basic Strategy
Kanji has the highest health in the game at 10500. Because of this, and because of his fighting style, Kanji can take hits and endure punishment like no other character. While it is important to note this, Kanji also has some of the best defensive tactics in the game, which may turn the high health into his greatest advantage. New Kanji players are advised to begin learning combos quickly; while his grabs may be scary enough to send squishy opponents running, his combos can easily send weaker opponents straight to Awakening or their doom. To balance the power and durability, Kanji is the most immobile character in P4A. His ground dash has a long start up with slow speed, his air dash is short and slow, and his only real method of fast motion are his attacks. This can cause problems because of potential counters.
At the start of a match, several opportunities arise. Most effective, however, are hitting C for Take-Mikazushi to take a swing at the opponent or jumping away and using Bet Ya Can't Take This! It is VERY important to note that Bet Ya Can't Take This! will NOT hit crouching opponents. This is stated above as well as in Kanji's command list, yet it is common for the NPC and new players to simply throw the move out in the hopes of a good hit with no effort. While Bet Ya Can't Take This! can be used to move around in the air while the opponent rushes, it is better to plan not to hit rather than rely on the move. Kanji's counters can be brutal, so try guarding and waiting for the perfect opening. With simple one-two hits like his sweep into Added Cruel Attack, Kanji can easily punish opponents a fair distance away. Worse, if an opponent pressures up close, This'll Hurt! can stamp out almost a third of weaker characters' health. Most opponents will run in fear of This'll Hurt! however, so keeping a good variety of attacks is recommended. Lastly, it is good to know that Kanji's Furious Action guards and can interrupt even SP Skills. Most times effective for this are against contact SP Skills or to avoid short projectile SP Skills (such as Yukiko's).
