What kind of game is Real Bout Fatal Fury?
RBFF is the first in a trilogy of games which are the closest that 2D fighting games ever get to truly emulating 3D fighting games, with its main draw being the Oversway system; battles take place in arenas with three planes the characters can occupy - the centre plane is where most of the action takes place, but characters can also move into the background or foreground planes in order to dodge the opponent’s attacks or gain access to unique Oversway attacks. Alongside the Oversway system is also an expansive chain combo system that grants characters a multitude of options for pressure and combos, all of which is bolstered by the real star of the show - the Out of Bounds mechanic, which emulates the Ring Out mechanic from the Virtua Fighter series. All of this makes the game extremely aggressive, explosive and interesting in a way few other fighting games have dared to try.
