Combat Lessons

Fighting Style

You would be mistaken if you think this fighting style is suited solely to long-range combat. Boasting a wide array of easy-to-use defensive techniques, it can deftly respond to attacks at any range, keeping its user alive and ready to strike their foe down when the opportunity presents itself.

Of course, the rod is a long weapon, effective at keeping enemies at bay while chipping away at their health. However, it also employs close-range techniques that simultaneously attack and defend, and can quickly turn the tables on an eager enemy who gets too close.

When excited or angry, an adherent of this style can shift to an all-out offensive style that can make short work of a defensive Opponent. However, these powerful offensive capabilities come at a price: the life—force of the wielder.

Style Lesson: Beginner

Tormenting Wide-range Attacks

Use the length of your staff to assault your foe at the start of the fight before they can reach you. If they try an 8—way run, Dragon Glide Bo (11_44_77AA) and Pursuing Strike (33_66_99A) can stop them in their tracks. in addition, Mid Sweep (3A) and Inner Peace (4A) can keep foes from getting too close.

Vertical Strikes for Close Combat

Once you've locked down your foe, keep up the pressure with Twin Bo Upper (6BB). You can delay the input for the second attack to try for a counter hit that will become a lethal hit. If your opponent tries to defend with a reversal edge, the third move, Heatwave (BBB), is a break attack, so it should be your next attack. For foes that use a crouching guard to avoid throws and low attacks, use Dragon Tree Bo (3B) to launch them into an air combo.

Damage Through Defense

This style focuses on defense, but you mustn't let your enemy attack freely. If you use the right strategies, you can deliver big damage.

Use an 8—way run to draw out an attack that misses, and then use Raven Slaughter 22_88[B]). If successful, this will be a lethal hit that you can chain into a combo.

After ducking to avoid high attacks or throws, you can counterattack with Reverse Bo Thrust (while rising B).

If you can read an incoming attack, pressing 6G to deflect it with a guard impact is another option. If that works, immediately use 4B for a lethal hit.

Balance Offense and Defense with Special Stances

This style has two special stances with guard impact properties. Monument (236) can deflect horizontal attacks, and Back Parry (214) can deflect vertical attacks. Watch your opponent and use each appropriately.

Counter with Special Stance Follow-ups

Once you've deflected an attack from a special stance. hit A right away. Geyser Kick (during Monument ABK) and Parry Sweeper (during Back Parry A) are lethal hits on a successful hit, letting you start a combo.

Critical Edge

Ling—Sheng Su Phoenix Loop

Properties

A middle attack that arcs downward and does a lot of damage on a hit. You can use it with a launcher like Dragon Tree Bo (3B) as part of a combo, or after baiting out an attack with a control technique as a counter. The attack throw you shift to upon hit will restore some of your health.

Tips

Its main use is to increase the damage of air combos. It is a guaranteed hit after landing Nine Ring Bo (after a reversal edge hit A), so keep it in mind as a go-to move after foiling an attack with a reversal edge.

Soul Charge

Switch to Pure Offense

When you are soul charged, your offensive power skyrockets. The commands for some moves change, and you gain access to destructive, guard-crushing techniques like Festival of the Damned (during soul charge A+G) and Headsman's Ax (during soul charge 4BBBK). Other soul charge-only moves include Vermillion Bird Descends (during soul charge 33_66_99A+B) and White Tiger Mark (during soul charge 33_66_99B+K), both excellent for taking the fight to your opponent and overwhelming their defenses.

Exclusive Critical Edge

Forbidden Moonset, a soul charge-only critical edge, is good for mixing into combos, but is also an unblockable attack that guarantees a hit after Parry Bolt (during Back Parry B) is blocked. Using a critical edge ends a soul charge. Your health will slowly drain while you are soul charged, so time your critical edge well.

Cleansing Rod

A soul attack that puts you in a soul charged state and cleaves the opponent with a mighty swing. Hitting an airborne or downed opponent will cause them to stand up, giving you an opportunity to strike with soul charge techniques.

The Fearsome Power of Kali-Yuga

While Kilik is soul charged, some of his attacks will be imbued with a special property, allowing him to use moves that restore his health with the power of his rod when they land or are guarded. Utilizing these moves will enable Kilik to further lay on the pressure while he is soul charged.

Reversal Edge

Following Up with A

An attack that pushes the opponent a great distance whether it hits or is blocked this is useful for pressuring them toward the edge of the stage. In addition, the critical edge Ling—Sheng Su Phoenix Loop chains on a hit.

Following Up with B

This attack can be chained on a hit, allowing for high total damage. While soul charged, the damage and number of hits increase, and it can easily lead into a guard crush, making this a fearsome technique.

Following Up with K

A break attack that lets you act again before a blocking opponent. While soul charged, it can chain into the critical edge Forbidden Moonset, making it harder for the opponent to use B.
