| The newest Mortal Kombat is actually the 9th game within the series. Just like the first game it is simply known as "Mortal Kombat" and features a return to the game's original roots. The gameplay consists of very detailed 3D models, with fighting animations based off of live action motion capture. Unlike the more recent games, Mortal Kombat returns to a 2D fighting plane. In another nod to the original series the story for this game actually takes place as an alternate version of the events that occurs within Mortal Kombat 1-3.
