The King of Fighters XI is the eleventh entry in SNK's The King of Fighters series, released in 2005 for the Sammy Atomiswave arcade board. It is the sequel to The King of Fighters 2003, breaking the tradition of annual releases, and thus dropping the naming convention that had been used by the series for almost a decade.
KOFXI stands out from the rest of its series in a lot of ways, and not just in its name or in its choice of hardware. It borrows the Multi-Shift System, the series' first ever real-time tag system introduced in KOF2003, and expands upon it in ways that drastically change the game into an incredibly fast-paced and explosive experience, with all manner of powerful offensive and defensive options afforded by character tools as well as the ability to use the Shift system to tag characters in and out for both offensive and defensive purposes. These features make KOFXI one of the most unique entries in the series, and has thus gained something of a cult status within the KOF playerbase at large, and it still sees regular competitive play over 15 years after its release.
