Combat Lessons
Fighting Style
Seong—style long sword is a Korean fighting style passed down from generation to generation in the Seong family. Known for its fierce and powerful zanbatou techniques, it excels at engaging an opponent from afar. A multitude of sweeping strikes use the weight of the blade's tip and centrifugal force to deliver devastating blows.
A number of this style's attacks are designed to hit hard, and few opponents can withstand more than one or two blows from a Seong sword. Those foolish enough to believe they can stand strong will quickly find themselves overwhelmed.
Style Lesson: Beginner
Overwhelm Opponents with Powerful Long-Range Attacks
Your weapon's length makes it ideal for mid- and long-range combat. The distance between you and your opponent at the start of a round is perfect for dealing maximum damage. Violet Squall (6A), Lightning Fang (1B), and Braided Spear (6B) are great for reducing your opponent's health from far away.
Adjust your distance to match your opponent's moves, and if they go on the defensive, launch a Sweeping Blade (2A+B), a long-range break attack. If your opponent counters with a long-range attack of their own, use the 8—way run to dodge, and then initiate a combo with a Sky Blossom (22_88B).
Style Lesson: Adept
Hit with the Blade Tip for Greater Damage
This style is designed for fighting at a distance, so long-range attacks do greater damage. Keep that in mind when trying to get the most out of techniques such as the Violet Squall (6A) and Lifting Heavens (3B).
Increasing Soul Gauge by Powering Up Moves
Some attacks can be powered up by holding a button. Holding the button will increase your soul gauge, so try to perform these techniques when you can.
Keep Your Distance
Getting tied-up in a close quarters battle could very well be a costly mistake. If your opponent has gotten too near, leap away with a Retreating Fang (4B) or Back Step Fang (2BB). If your opponent pressures you with a fast high attack, use an evasive Radiant Wing (8A+B) to keep them in line.
Style Lesson: Master
Break Attack from a Crouch
While close quarters combat isn't recommended, if your opponent guards, you can move in and smash through their guard with either a Liquid Rising (while crouching 1KK) or a Lifting Wing (while rising B) By performing 2A+BG or 1BG, you will feint and return to a crouching position, allowing you to link nicely into the above.
Strategic Guard Crushes
In addition to break attacking middle and low attacks, this style places emphasis on wearing down your opponent's guard stamina. Wide swinging attacks such as the Spinning Divide (33_66_99A+B), Seong's Diamond Crusher (11_44_77A+B), and Furious Swing ~ Stone Shock (46A+G[B]) are particularly useful for this.
Critical Edge
New Seong Style: Scarlet Meteor
Properties
A long-range downward swing that hits in the middle. It deals major damage and can be integrated into combos.
Tips
This attack has a long reach and is quite speedy, so it is ideal for punishing feints. Use it in conjunction with combo launchers such as Lifting Heavens (3B), Lifting Wing (while rising B), and Sky Blossom (22_88B) to take a significant chunk out of your opponent's health.
Soul Charge
Utilize Your Heavy Arsenal of Break Attacks
During a soul charge, your main long-range attacks—Lightning Fang (1B) and Violet Squall (6A)—become break attacks. Use combinations of the following moves, for example, to stop your opponent in their tracks and let you dominate the battle: Seong Snapping Jaw (during soul charge 33_66_99AA), or Whirling Willow Frenzy (during soul charge 22_88AAAA).
Enhanced Break Attacks
During a soul charge, close proximity abilities to get past an opponent's guard increase in power, and Seong Cloud Burst (during soul charge, while crouching 1KKB) is unlocked—useful against an opponent wary of break attacks.
Seong's Supernal Strike
A soul attack in which you thrust your weapon into the ground and rush forward. The attack puts you in a soul charged state. Hitting a downed opponent with the attack will cause them to stand up, giving you the opportunity to strike them with soul charge techniques. Holding the button will slow the move down, but increase its power.
Reversal Edge
Following Up with A
A wide variety of follow-up combo opportunities are available to you. For example, AA is a good go—to move because it becomes a combo hit, but you can combine it with A[B]-useful for grinding down your opponent's guard stamina—to try to crush your opponent's guard.
Following Up with B
Causes the most damage of the three follow-up types. Regular hits can be combined with, for example, a Spinning Divide (33_66_99A+B); lethal hits can be combined with, for example, a Seong's Diamond Crusher (11_44_77A+B). Because you're jumping, you'll take minimal damage from a K attack (depending on your opponent's fighting style).
Following Up with K
Deflect B and send your opponent flying with a kick, potentially resulting in a ring out. Even if your opponent guards, you'll be able to act again before your opponent, allowing you to go on the attack from a crouching position.
