| -Story-
| |
| | |
| "The year, 1789.
| |
| | |
| As frost, floods, fires, and famine play havoc with the world, a sinister castle appears in the land of Shimabara. The lord of that castle-Shiro Tokisada Amakusa.
| |
| | |
| Having previously been resurrected from the realm of the dead, Amakusa was supposed to have been slain in the midst of his evil designs, but now he returns to subjugate the world of the living.
| |
| | |
| Having already engulfed the Shimabara peninsula, this castle of evil grows larger day by day.
| |
| | |
| People soon call it "Amakusa Castle" and in their terror begin to revere it, hoping this will save them.
| |
| | |
| But little did they know that this act of desperation would only summon further misfortune....
| |
| | |
| Amakusa has returned for more trouble, this time taking over a castle in a jagged wasteland and kidnapping Kazuki and Sogetsu's sister in order to use her as a power source. The power spreading from Amakusa's work catches the attention of various warriors who head in for a variety of purposes. Zankuro also has a hand in the story."

| Samurai Shodown 4 was SNK's followup to the seemingly rushed Samurai Shodown 3 game, not only addressing the problems but adding additions to the gameplay.
| |
| | |
| = Game Mechanics =
| |
| | |
| The Game Mechanics are similar to SS3, but still retains various additions:
| |
| | |
| Double lifebars
| |
| | |
| CD Combo - Pushing CD together will activate a slash that can be followed by sequence of buttons creating a chain combo.
| |
| | |
| Aerial blocking is removed.
| |
| | |
| Guardcrush - Throwing your opponent into a stagger which'll allow you to follow up with a slash.
| |
| | |
| Hopcrush - A fast move that hits your opponent when he is crouched and defending. Can only be blocked high.
| |
| | |
| Doding - AB will dodge certain attacks if you are a distance away.
| |
| | |
| Sideswitch - When close to opponent, pushing AB will put you behind him. Considerably slower than SS3 sideswitching.
| |
| | |
| Life restoration - when you are knocked down, you restore a bit of life.
| |
| | |
| POW Charging - you cannot charge up the POW meter.
| |
| | |
| Rage Explosion - pushing ABC will make your character explode! The POW bar is replaced with the Rage meter, which is dependant on the amount of damage you take and how much POW meter you previoiusly had. More details further on.
| |
| | |
| No Contest moves (aka Fatalities) - as its namesake, the No Contest moves are performed when your opponent is on the ground and is leaning forward before the final blow. The command for the "Fatality" will appear under the timer and you must execute it while it's under the timer. The motions are down, down, up, forward, foward+C.
| |
| | |
| Seppukku - A suicide move that allows you to have a maxed out POW bar provided that you do have a next round. The motions are forward, down+start.
| |
| | |
| Catch throw- As in previous shodowns, this will allow you to pick up an opponent's weapon and throw it at them! In SS3/SS4, you can pick up the weapon and throw it even while you still have your own weapon. However, it just stuns the opponent for a short period of time.
| |
| | |
| The two different versions of characters, Slash (Shura 修羅), and Bust (Rasetsu 羅刹) are retained in SS4.
